Dan Epstein

When: Fri., July 23, 7 p.m. 2010

Major league baseball loves to celebrate its heritage—indeed, one can argue that in the recent past, baseball ceased to become a game set in the present, but instead became acutely aware of the need to continuously market itself as a repository of Americana, a living memorial institution. We suspect the tipping point between present and past occurred sometime in the 1970s, or perhaps in the decade that followed, because baseball's Me Decade was largely one to forget, from Disco Demolition Nights to hideous uniforms. Well, unless you're an ironist like Dan Epstein, who will be in town this weekend to promote his book Big Hair and Plastic Grass: A Funky Ride Through Baseball and America in the Swinging 70s. Tonight at Slim's, he's reading from his book beginning at 7; afterward, DJ Midnight Cowboy will spin a funk and soul set, followed by a live set of 1970s rock by The Oscar Gambles, a pickup band composed of members of The Static Minds, The Revolutionary Sweethearts, along with The Infamous Sugar and The Royal Nites. Music begins at 9 p.m., with a $5 cover. —David Fellerath
