Dale Watson & His Lonestars

When: Fri., July 12, 7 p.m. 2013
Price: $9-18

Dale Watson asked Billy Joe Shaver's permission to mythologize the shooting outside a Waco bar that left a bullet in the jaw of Shaver's antagonist. Shaver said he'd rather Watson didn't, to which Watson chuckled and confessed he already had. The song, "Where Do You Want It," highlights his latest, El Rancho Azul. It's pure Watson with an ambling Bakersfield Country vibe, like something Merle Haggard would've done in his heyday. A hardcore traditionalist, Watson has released more than 20 down-home albums featuring country-rock trucker songs, honky-tonk, Western swing and sometimes a touch of rockabilly. He also wrote the soundtrack to Richard Linklater's film Bernie, being screened afterward. —Chris Parker
