Dad & Dad, Canine Heart Sounds, Grandma Sparrow (Back Room)

When: Sat., July 11, 9 p.m. 2015
Price: $5-$7
Is this bill stacked backwards? Carrboro’s Dad & Dad headlines, which is cool, but the evening’s best offerings begin early. Grandma Sparrow, the new outpost of Megafaun drummer Joe Westerlund, takes listeners on a weird, wonderful journey through the fictitious town of Piddletractor, where they bask in colorful arrangements and a whirlwind of different characters. In live settings, this psychedelic spectacle really flourishes. Westerlund’s backing band is Durham’s own Canine Heart Sounds, who take the show’s middle slot. Their new Live on the Moon is a satisfying mix of sharp musicianship, slick licks and a little noodling. —Allison Hussey
