Re: “In Chapel Hill mayoral race, conservatives try to upend the liberal front-runner

I am curious why you have labeled Mr. Czajkowski a conservative. He is unaffiliated and has never defined himself as such. I am a life-long Democrat and have lived in Chapel Hill for almost two decades. I support Mr. Czajkowski because he is a centrist--he's neither unabashedly liberal as is Mr. Kleinschmidt nor profoundly conservative as are Mr. Cho and Mr. Wolff.

If the Indy wishes for Chapel Hill voters to take their political coverage seriously, they might use their labels with a bit more care. An unaffiliated centrist is not a conservative--it's an unaffiliated centrist.

Re: “Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools

The Indy wasn't silent when I spoke to Ms.Strom about this issue yesterday. She stated several times that the Indy does lots of homework and that the paper stands behind the process and the endorsements.

Re: “Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools

When I called the Independent today to ask them what on earth they were doing by criticizing Mike Kelley for not showing up to enough meetings, Ms. Strom told me that the Independent's endorsements often cause heated responses. I suspect that what Ms. Strom was saying to me was that often people don't like the endorsements the Indy makes. I repeatedly told her that this particular (non)endorsement wasn't one that I didn't like; it was one I found egregiously unjust. Mike Kelley is the only member of the school board who answers all the emails parents send him, he shows up to meeting after meeting, always prepared, always working to make sure the decisions the district is making are sound. For the past few years he has done this despite the fact that his wife and child were in a horrific accident and have needed long-term therapy and care. Frankly, I was surprised Mike wanted to run again--but he did because he believes in the value of serving the public. The Independent's facile and questionable statement that "His rigorous job as a physician scientist at Durham's veterans' hospital also has prevented him from attending many forums and activities beyond his basic board duties." is flat out inaccurate and slanderous. My faith in the paper's ability to make informed judgments is not just shaken--it's broken.
