D. Charles Speer & the Helix

When: Tue., March 11, 9:30 p.m. 2014

For the five-piece New York roots-rock band D. Charles Speer & The Helix, the abbreviation "C&W" could mean not only Country & Western but also Cosmic & Weird. Frontman Dave Shuford grew up in the South but has spent years working the fringes of New York experimental scenes with the No Neck Blues Band and the outbound Rhyton. He's backed on the new Double Exposed by a whipsmart team of players that includes Hans Chew, himself a compendium of Americana made with keyboards. Together, they pull songs about disasters and dreams through a Band-like past and push them into astonishing discomfort zones—raging guitar solos and outlandish Greek accompaniment, discordant jams and Krautrock auras. Shuford suggests Tony Joe White being reborn with a new set of strange influences and friends but with an abiding love of rich songs, sung way down low. —Grayson Haver Currin
