With surveillance concerns and foreign hacker attacks tumbling through the news cycle, Michael Mann's new thriller would seem well-timed to reflect our current cultural anxieties. And it would, if the movie were really about hackers. But despite the marketing campaign and title, this is really about Mann's usual crime thriller concerns: nighttime cityscapes, reflective surfaces and hard men with big guns. Chris Hemsworth is miscast as an imprisoned computer genius sprung by the FBI to help investigate a ruthless online terrorist. Mann stages his usual beautiful violence through Los Angeles, Hong Kong and Jakarta, but never pauses to investigate the interesting parts of his own premise. Right about now, it would be lovely—or at least cathartic—to see a smart thriller about international cybercrime, and Mann's just the guy to make that film. He just didn't, that's all.

Director: Michael Mann
