Re: “After a decade of losses, the state fair gambled on Tar Heel talent. They won.

As a longtime fairgoer, I was disappointed with the entertainment in Dorton. My grandmother and I don't like the rides or games so we looked forward to a Dorton Arena concert each year - and would go to one. We tried giving the homegrown thing a chance but the lineup in Dorton did not interest me nor my grandmother whatsoever. I'm all for local music but, in my opinion, that's what the other stages are for. I will agree that I liked how those stages were run this year. I think focusing solely on local music in Dorton is going too far the other way. I've always said that there should be a mix of both local and more national touring acts that don't come to NC that often - and when I say national touring acts I don't mean the biggest names out there as well. There are many I could name that would fit perfectly at the fair but couldn't play this year since all had to have NC ties. I think common ground can be found that pleases everyone.
