Curtis McMurtry

When: Sat., March 30, 9 p.m. 2013
Price: $10

The son of songwriter James McMurtry (himself the son of novelist Larry McMurtry), young Curtis McMurtry possesses an easy artistic assurance. Though primarily a guitarist, he played in his high school's jazz band, so there's a strong swing flavor to his music. He's not limited stylistically, but you can definitely hear the influence of Tom Waits and Squirrel Nut Zippers in his sometimes moody sound. While still studying music at Sarah Lawrence Colllege last summer, he released his second album, Proper Way to Travel, highlighted by the title track's sardonic take on materialism. With Elizabeth South. —Chris Parker
