Culture Mill Launch Party

When: Sat., March 28, 7 p.m. 2015
Price: $15-$18

You've probably noticed the words "Culture Mill" speckling the INDY's dance and theater coverage since last year, when Tommy Noonan, Leah Wilks and Murielle Elizéon founded the nonprofit in Saxapahaw, using Haw River Ballroom to incubate new works by performing artists in residence. But we're still uncertain how the organization plans to implement all of the far-reaching ideas about community, technology, civil society and artistic exchange that compose its mission statement. We'll find out more at what also sounds like a fun, eclectic party. After free Shaga and Parkour classes in the daytime, with food vendors on site, acoustic duo MAJO LOVO gives a concert at 6 p.m., followed by a DJ set from Direwolf. Jennifer Curtis performs solo violin, and later provides accompaniment for Mess by Wilks' dance company, Vector, which just premiered Habitus in the Durham Independent Dance Artists season. Wilks cofounded DIDA as well as Culture Mill, creating a strong bond between the organizations, and DIDA's hilarious season opener, It's Not Me It's You (by Anna Barker, with ... wait for it ... Wilks), also gets reprised, before it heads for ADF this summer. Topped off with a concert by Kaira Ba and Pierce Freelon, that's a lot of bang for your entertainment buck. But close observers of the performing-arts landscape may be most interested in the promised clarification of Culture Mill's near-term plans. 1 p.m.–midnight, $15–$18, 1711 Saxapahaw-Bethlehem Church Rd., Saxapahaw, 336-525-2314, Howe
