Cults co-founder Brian Oblivion caused waves of Internet revulsion last week when he floated the notion that the financial support and professional savvy that comes with a major-label deal was worth much more than all the underground credibility in New York. After all, his band, a duo with sweet-voiced singer Madelin Follin, just released its second album, Static, on Columbia. Starting with the surprise 2010 hit "Go Outside," Cults' '60s girl-group melodies are no one's idea of a belligerent noise bomb. Being well-compensated to aim for the widest possible audience doesn't seem like a compromise, then, so much as a pre-existing career goal.Of course he loves the majors. His band was made for them. —Jeff Klingman
