Cuff the Duke, Acoustic Grounds

When: Tue., May 15, 8 p.m. 2012
Price: $7-10

Those who arrived early to Blue Rodeo's show at The ArtsCenter a couple years back may well have been won over by the opener, Cuff the Duke, an Ontario outfit whose last couple of records were produced by Blue Rodeo co-leader Greg Keelor. Musically, they mine a similar vein of melodic roots-rock, though they have ties to less traditional realms as well, having spent much of their early career backing up Canadian indie mainstay Hayden. Their more progressive side shows on a new EP of covers titled In Our Time, in which they tackle tunes by the likes of Smog, Guided By Voices and Sonic Youth. The 8 p.m. show costs $7. Cuff the Duke also plays May 17 at The Pour House in Raleigh with Band of Opportunity (9 p.m., $5). —Peter Blackstock
