Cryptic Hymn, Tyranny Enthroned

When: Tue., Sept. 1, 9 p.m. 2015
Price: $5
Kentucky’s Cryptic Hymn and St. Louis’ Tyranny Enthroned both label themselves “blackened death metal.” That’s apt enough, as they both take elements from both forms and twist them into formidable knots. The shared descriptor, though, suggests just how much room is beneath that hybrid banner: Tyranny Enthroned are belligerent and brutal, with vocals bellowed over relentless blast beats. But the more sophisticated Cryptic Hymn pivot between riffs sharp enough for thrash and action fast enough for black metal, as if on a thrill ride routed through multiple levels of hell. —Grayson Haver Currin
