Crowns | Temple Theatre | Stage | Indy Week
This is a past event.
When: Jan. 27-Feb. 6 2011
Price: $10-20

If you missed the December run of this truly moving music theater piece at Burning Coal Theatre (which was honored for best direction, musical direction and ensemble in the Indy 2010 theater awards), here's your chance. The toe-tapping family drama was co-produced by Sanford's Temple Theatre, which is presenting a two-week revival of the show.

Regina Taylor's script is loosely based on photographer Michael Cunningham and journalist Craig Marberry's 2000 best-selling photo book that documented the "hat queen" traditions among African-American church women. A mostly sanctified septet in a small-town South Carolina church tries to pass on its folkways to a troubled young girl just arrived from Brooklyn, Yolanda (Naima Adedapo), who's been sent to live with her grandmother after her brother is killed by a street gang. Fortified by Jan Powell's musical direction, director Rebecca Holderness and an all-star cast (including Joan J, Paul Garrett, C. Delton Streeter and vocalist Yolanda Rabun) elevate Taylor's script into a sassy, soulful and moving meditation not only on how one embodies—or accessorizes—faith, but how on earth you find it to begin with. The run begins with tonight's 7 p.m. show and runs through Feb. 6. —Byron Woods
