Crooked Fingers, Cotton Jones, Mount Moriah

When: Wed., Dec. 8, 9 p.m. 2010
Price: $12

Though Eric Bachmann's Crooked Fingers has had a longer tenure than his prior outfit, Archers of Loaf, the latter's influence looms larger. (Just listen to Scouting For Girls' "A New Day," which backs a new Sony TV commercial.) It's not for lack of trying: What began as creaking, mud-caked Americana has evolved dramatically over the last three albums into a more brightly melodic and idiosyncratic outfit. While still beholden to roots music, Crooked Fingers has grown less minimalist, embracing strings and brass and abandoning much of its world-weary Waits-ian lope. Even Bachmann's raspy basso has morphed from its initial croak to something reminiscent of Neil Diamond's meaty croon. Indeed, 2005's Dignity and Shame suggested an indie pop act with a hint of Springsteen-ian soul. The transformation continued with 2008's wonderful Forfeit/Fortune, which assayed spunky keyboard-driven beauty and sweet cooing female backing vocals. Tonight, Bachmann's band comes supported by two excellent openers, Cotton Jones and the arid Mount Moriah. Pay $12 at 9 p.m. —Chris Parker
