Horror

As a genre, classic Gothic horror has its requirements: an innocent heroine, a tone of supernatural dread, a crumbling manor on the moors. Ancestral curses are always nice. Here, director Guillermo del Toro delivers a bloody and beautiful love letter to the genre, which recalls the lushly designed Gothic romances of Hollywood’s Golden Age. Mia Wasikowska plays the young American, Edith, spirited off to a derelict English mansion by the mysterious baronet Thomas Sharpe (Tom Hiddleston) and his twisted sister, Lucille (Jessica Chastain). But the sets and wardrobes are the real stars as del Toro packs every frame with sumptuous 19th-century elegance and decay. Beware that heavy violence, gory apparitions and some very adult themes gradually emerge. The movie may be old-fashioned, but quaint it ain’t.
