Drama

This story of a alcoholic country singer who turns his life around with the help of a young woman and her son recalls Tender Mercies, which gave Robert Duvall his only Academy Award. Playing middle-aged boozy crooner "Bad" Blake, Jeff Bridges is likely to turn this film—in which Duvall co-stars—into his own Oscar vehicle. Besides its derivative storyline, co-screenwriter Scott Cooper's directorial debut suffers from a lack of chemistry between Bad and the much younger Jean (Maggie Gyllenhaal, also Oscar-nominated for her performance). While Crazy Heart is the cinematic equivalent of a country-standard cover band, Bridges' solo act is the showstopper.
