Crash Test Dummies, Kellin Watson

When: Tue., May 17, 8:30 p.m. 2011
Price: $15

The way the music industry was structured in the mid-'90s, all kinds of quirky little bands got a shot at commercial radio play. Major labels, ever-hungry to sign the next big thing, signed indies left and right, resulting in one-hit wonders whose careers typically continued in their specialized scenes (Crash Test Dummies, Digable Planets, Seven Mary Three and, to an extent, the Flaming Lips). The Dummies, for their part, remain what they were—occasionally absurdist folk-rock defined by Brad Roberts' low baritone. But as tempting as it may be to request "Mmm, Mmm, Mmm, Mmm," trust the set list. It's fun to watch these Canadians get silly, but the more serious folk ballads bring impressive weight. "Songbird," from this year's Ooh-La-La!, expertly outlines existential crises: "I looked out at the trees that gently swayed/They didn't need to know how they were made." Kellin Watson opens the 8:30 p.m. show. —Corbie Hill
