Though his falsetto has frayed with age, and though he’s slipped steadily toward the realm of self-parody, Adam Duritz continues to write confidently poignant songs. As unafraid to expose his emotional underbelly on last year’s Somewhere Under Wonderland as he was on the long-ago career highlight Recovering the Satellites, he remains a crooner of and for the yearning. It’s too bad, then, that he can’t convince his Counting Crows to come along for the trip. Last year in Raleigh, the rest of the band suggested a flimsy jam outfit out on vacation. And their work on the new material is perhaps less inspiring. Perhaps Duritz has urged them into urgency for this trip. —Grayson Haver Currin
