Cornbread Nation 5

When people outside of the South think of our region, they often first think of the food. The South is the home of Cajun cuisine, soul food and Coca-Cola, while North Carolina itself claims such nutritional essentials as Cheerwine and Krispy Kreme. The fifth anthology put out by the Southern Foodways Alliance encompasses the best of Southern food writing. Some of the tome's authors will be on hand to discuss the region's unique cuisine. Matzo Ball Gumbo author Marcie Cohen Ferris will speak on why people study food, and Carroll Leggett will discuss "soft-shell science," most likely of the crustacean persuasion. Former UNC sociology professor John Shelton Reed will talk about the origins of everyone's favorite tailgating entrée—barbecue. Biscuits and cornbread with local butter and homemade jam will be provided by Watts Grocery. —Sarah Ewald
