Cooke Street Carnival

When: Sat., Oct. 16, 1-8 p.m. 2010

This neighborhood party offers an eclectic batch of newer Raleigh acts, plus plenty of other activities to engage the rest of your senses. Hip-hop hotshot King Mez commands the headlining slot with gritty rhymes balanced by accessible production, though the quality remains high throughout the bill. Other performers include dreamy indie pop duo Kid Future, twangsters Natural Science, laid-back rockers Jack the Radio, hazy indie folk trio The Cellar Seas, soulful roots combo Stella Lively and raw 'n' rowdy bluesman Johnny Swank. The One Tribe drum circle kicks things off, with DJs spinning between sets. Also on hand to entertain will be a magician, a Hula-hooper, a pumpkin-carving station and a kissing booth. The free festival runs 1–8 p.m. Bring cash: Besides all the food and drink choices—Only Burger, Locopops, Aviator Brewing, Crumb, Remedy Diner and Bulkogi Korean BBQ, plus a fish-fry and pig-picking—local artisans will also be selling their wares.
