Re: “Troika Music Festival turns to local stars and organization

In recent years, it seems like this discrepancy in who gets paid and who doesn't get paid is the hot topic for Troika in the music community. Having helped on Troika in the past, I know that Troika would love to pay all those bands. Truly, this is Troika's sticky wicket- trying to maintain a grassroots festival and add in some mainstream bands. Troika is d.i.y., and Downtown Live is sponsored by beer money. Sure, Downtown Live is free for the attendee, but did you really have a good time, and how much did you have to pay for your cheap beer in a plastic cup? I think it easy to throw stones at the bands that charge a guarantee, but don't forget. They have to go on tour and sell their record for their label. They cannot maintain jobs as you and I do, because they have to hit the road. Some labels require their bands to tour 250 days out of the year, don't you think they deserve to be paid fairly for their work and effort? In an ideal world every band would be paid, but then you would have to charge the festival-goer more at the door. With the recession, too high a ticket value would keep people from going. So how do you solve this issue? You could make the entire festival free and not charge anyone. But then you will have a festival that is just like the Club is Open festival in Chapel Hill, and you will have to drop the headliners. If anyone reading this knows the answer to this issue, post it now!
