Colossus | Kings | Clubs & Concerts | Indy Week
This is a past event.
When: Fri., July 3, 9 p.m. 2015
Price: $6

If the typical Stars and Stripes-and-Springsteen soundtrack to Fourth of July fireworks leaves you without the eagle in your eye, this Independence Day-themed evening of grandiosely patriotic film music might help. Stepping out of its comfort zone, esteemed Raleigh metal classicists Colossus will launch a set that draws upon two diametrically opposed but somehow puzzle-piece-like American soundtracks. Top Gun, the phallocentric, war-friendly Tom Cruise vehicle from 1986, is best known musically for Berlin's "Take My Breath Away" and the Kenny Loggins hit "Danger Zone." Team America: World Police, the puppet-action adventure piss-take by South Park's Trey Parker and Matt Stone, is typified by "America (Fuck Yeah)," a spot-on parody of homegrown jingoism, and the weirdly irresistible ballad "Freedom Isn't Free." (Spoiler alert: It costs a buck-oh-five). The band will offer additional "All-American classics," but they'll only say those have America in the title and are awesome. That seems to exclude Neil Diamond.

9 p.m., $6, 14 W. Martin St., Raleigh, 919-833-1091, Klein
