Colossus, White Tiger, The Bed of Roses

When: Thu., June 17, 10 p.m. 2010
Price: Free

Colossus is the band Dethklok meant to be: Where Metalocalypse is a heavy-handed parody that often gets lost in its own darkness, Colossus is a serious band that realizes exactly how much fun metal can be. In the vein of the late-'70s and early-'80s metal prodigies they invoke, Colossus delivers equally amusing and badass tunes—"Kill More Better," for instance—with a wink, a grin and a lot of headbanging. With technically superior guitar heroics and a perfect heavy metal rhythm section, this Raleigh act can pull off lines about "slaughtering ghouls" while searing the cilia of your eardrums. Drench Rancid with testosterone, cut out all that ska and you have the opener, Wilmington's righteously snotty White Tiger & the Bed of Roses. —Corbie Hill
