Collective Soul, Kick the Robot

When: Wed., Oct. 7, 8 p.m. 2015
Price: $30.50
Apart from its mere existence, the most surprising thing about “This,” the lead single from Collective Soul’s first new album in six years, is how hard the cut from the quarter-century-old band fights to keep up with currents. There’s an introductory reference to Marvin Gaye and peppy falsetto verses that suggest Maroon 5, a scowling bridge that nods to Kings of Leon and glossy harmonies that make you think Collective Soul totally plans on a return trip to the Top 40. It makes way, too, for the same the low-range grunts that once delivered so many memorable “yeahs” and still-mechanized electric guitars that, even after all these years, posses the charm and individuality of a record executive trying to reanimate Kurt Cobain’s corpse to lead a pop-rock band. —Grayson Haver Currin
