Brokeback is the aperitif on this dynamic bill. This side project of Tortoise bassist Douglas McCombs began in the mid-'90s but hadn't released an album in a decade until Brokeback and the Black Rock surfaced in January. Aside from sharing an instrumental approach, Brokeback doesn't have much in common with McCombs' larger project. The approach is more spacious, lugubrious and dramatic, with a subtle jazz-fusion undercurrent. There's plenty of melodic color and structural arc, helping Brokeback to avoid the running-in-place feeling that often afflicts instrumental rock.

Louisville, Ky., headliners Coliseum rush ahead with an intriguing blend of underground guitar rock styles culled from the last three decades. The crush of sound and throbbing tempos are characteristic of hardcore, if somewhat slower, while singer and guitarist Ryan Patterson's burly speak-sing is more reminiscent of the impassioned half-shout of late '80s underground rock. Sister Faith, their fourth release since forming a decade ago, is an evolution; the noise is more manicured and focused and the hooks durable and more plentiful, at times recalling the indomitable crunch of Titus Andronicus, only louder. —Chris Parker
