Cody Canada & the Departed, Statesboro Revue

When: Thu., Feb. 23, 8 p.m. 2012
Price: $12-15

Cody Canada made his bones with hippie-country act Cross Canadian Ragweed before internal conflict broke up the band late in 2010. He quickly recruited one of his CCR mates and set about a similar path with the Departed. Last summer they released their debut, This Is Indian Land. Rather than push out a bunch of untested originals, he plucked his favorite tunes from a passel of Oklahoma songwriters that included Leon Russell, J.J. Cale and Bob Childers. Their approach leans heavier toward the rock side of country while soft-pedaling his former band's jammier tendencies, all of it fueled by Canada's warm singing. Statesboro Revue opens the 8 p.m. show —Chris Parker
