CocoRosie, Kembra

When: Wed., Nov. 6, 9 p.m. 2013

"Indie rock" in 2013 is a diverse field indeed, but it's generally populated by pleasantry, from the stately mannerism of The National to the elegant beats of emerging producer Ryan Hemsworth. Yet for the last decade, the duo of sisters known as CocoRosie have remained faithfully strange and provocative, weaving tales of sexual depravity and emotional instability around broken folk, busted samples and skipping beats. Despite their coos and oft-pretty textures, they're polarizing, stoking conversations over sexism and artistic intent in supposedly progressive communities—exactly the shot in the arm that these modern curtsies require. Their latest, Tales of a Grass Widow, unabashedly mines hip-hop and world music, again turning the Casady sisters into the subjects of undeserved and reductive scoffs. Wait for "Roots of My Hair," a mesmerizing 12-minute quest for transcendence in a world of "dead branches" and withering prairie. —Grayson Haver Currin
