Sony Pictures Animation keeps the franchise money trail a-rollin' with their newest release, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2. The sequel to its 2009 predecessor opens an unspecified period of time after the events shown in the first film, in which the inventor Flint (voiced by Bill Hader) creates a machine that can cause various kinds of food to fall from the sky. After the residents of his hometown on the island of Swallow Falls were forced to evacuate, a science force led by the Steve Jobs-ian Chester V (Will Forte) were sent in to confiscate the machine and clean the island; what they found instead was an evolved life-form in the shape of sentient food beasts. The voice cast in the film is superb, and features a host of actors that it is possible to believe were actually hired for their talent, and not their name value. Unfortunately there is only so much that they can do with a script that relies this heavily on scatological jokes, and is afraid to really explore how evil the main villain really is. Never trust a film that opens with a five minute recap of the previous film in order to pad its runtime.
