Suspense/Thriller

Taking what could have been a garden-variety legal thriller, director John Crowley works wonders by simply placing the action in London. The film allows us to enter into the world of international terrorist trials through the paranoia felt by the defense lawyers (Eric Bana and Rebecca Hall) of an alleged terrorist cell leader accused of being the mastermind of a suicide bombing that kills 120 people in an outdoor market. Of course, with this being a mainstream film, Bana and Hall's characters must be ex-lovers forced to work together, but writer Steve Knight does add interesting wrinkles to their working relationship. The counselors find themselves both under the watchful eye of the attorney general (Jim Broadbent), and in the ever-growing shadow of the MI5. Not only does this feature some of the best work either of the two stars has shown in years, it is also one of the few movies to be released in 2013 that deserves your undivided attention.
