Close One

When: Feb. 24-May 28 2012

CAM opens Close One, a new installation of Chicago sculptor Chris Bradley's work in the Independent Weekly Gallery. In installations elsewhere, Bradley has scattered provisional-looking pieces around a room, fitting objects ranging from discarded dreck to everyday objects into stand-like forms made of lumber and plywood. At first glance, they appear slapdash, but some of the objects are not what they seem: stuff like potato chips and paint rollers are cast in bronze and painted trompe l'oeil. The arrangement of the sculptures suggests obliquely violent narratives that viewers take their own roles in as they walk through the space. Bradley is repurposing pop art deadpan in order to critique art as product in a corporatized world. His spaces are powered both by humor and an arcane, personal mythology. —Chris Vitiello
