CJ Chenier & the Red Hot Louisiana Band

When: Sun., Feb. 16 2014
Price: $22-$25
C.J. Chenier was born an heir to a throne, but he initially rejected the charge. While his dad, Clifton, reigned as King of Zydeco, C.J. strayed from the style, instead developing a taste for soul. He studied jazz at Texas Southern and even learned the sax. In 1978, when his dad's saxophonist left the band, the prodigal returned. A decade later, C.J. picked up the accordion. The "Crown Prince of Zydeco" has since developed an idiosyncratic, funk-infused style, and his bearish baritone accentuates zydeco's blues and soul roots. Clifton, who died in 1987, received a posthumous Lifetime Achievement Grammy last month. —Chris Parker
