Circus 1903

When: Sept. 26-Oct. 1 2017
Price: $20-$156

A century ago, before TV and the Internet, a lone institution brought prodigious, death-defying performers and exotic animals from far, far away to American audiences: the circus. The garish, highly skilled denizens of the big top—and its edgier alternatives, like the Ten-In-One and the Single-O—whispered and roared of a world far bigger than the towns in which they performed. Small wonder that "run off and join the circus" remains cultural shorthand for the ultimate escape. The closing of the Ringling Bros. touring circus last May makes this time capsule more precious. It's a cavalcade of contortionists, acrobats, aerialists, and clowns, abetted by an imaginative, sensitive variation on the wild animal acts of yore: uncanny puppets created by Significant Object, the group that devised the stunning equestrians used in War Horse, depicting an elephant mother and child. Step right up. —Byron Woods
