Ciompi Quartet Lunchtime Classics

When: Tue., Feb. 14, 12 p.m. 2012
Price: Free

The crinkle of a Fritos bag is perfectly acceptable during an Allegro in these lunch-break-long informal performances by Duke University's Ciompi Quartet. In addition to being a nice musical intervention in one's work day, the concerts are accompanied by brief musicological notes from the musicians. Ciompi offers one of Haydn's influential "Sun Quartets," Op. 20, No. 4, the third and fourth movements of which are gallant gypsy scampers. They'll also present Shostakovich's Op. 83, No. 4, marking the 64th anniversary of the Soviet government banning selected Shostakovich works for their lovely, inaccessible "formalism." —Chris Vitiello
