Eminent pianist and founder of the Cuban jazz group Irakere, Chucho Valdés is one of many Cuban artists looking forward to more open relations between the United States and Cuba. In the ’80s and ’90s, his band suffered the loss of founding members through defection while touring. This almost seemed to push Valdés toward even more musical innovation, helping him become one of the most emblematic musicians of Cuba. Constantly evolving, he blends Afro-Cuban traditions with modern jazz sounds. Although he looks to the past for references, he looks to the future for stylistic cues, often playing with much younger musicians and avoiding the nostalgia trap. Expect this Irakere tour to feature newer renditions of old favorites. —Amanda Black
