Re: “Greenbridge: A new chapter in a tense history

Enjoyed this article very much.

As a home owner on North Street in the Northside neighborhood our family is currently dealing with these same issues. The Wesley Foundation is wanting to build a four story 144 student capacity dormitory where Los Patrios Restaraunt, Manuel Costa's law office, and Chas Gardenar's chiropractic office is. In between La Rez and Pantana Bob's.

I'll be completely honest and admit that we are 100% against this idea as it will have a huge negative impact on our neighborhood.

- 144 students with 29 parking spaces in a neighborhood that's almost impossible to park in as it is
- removing three successful tax paying entities and replacing it with a tax exempt institution
- Having a four story building in my backyard with windows...lots of windows

Have you ever been doing anything and felt like their were 144 people watching your own backyard?

I could go on.

To say the least, this will significantly lessen the value of our homes. Not only will it effect the people that are already in the neighborhood but that location isn't where I would place 144 "substance free" students. Bookending them with two of the more high energy restaurant/bars in town that quite often have weddings, outdoor live comedy/bands and other events that go well into the night. Which are important to the exciting downtown scene.

And this is only a few years after we decided to change our zoning to RESTRICTED to prevent THIS VERY THING FROM HAPPENING!!!
ie. The Warehouse. As you mention in your article.

As i agree that Chapel Hill definitely needs to build up rather than out, I feel that it can be done more gracefully than this. In a more nurturing way that better serves the students, residents, home owners that are already there. Not adding to the problem in any with a grocery store on that corner ....

Anyway, plenty of story to be told there.

Thanks again for the article
