Chip Shearin

When: Sat., Nov. 1, 7 p.m. 2014
Price: $20-$35
Chip Shearin’s claim to fame came at 17, when he worked as a session bassist for the Sugar Hill Gang’s 1979 classic “Rapper’s Delight.” He recorded with jazz and pop stars including Janet Jackson, Faith Evans and Christina Aguilera. The North Carolina native and Duke grad taught at N.C. Central but now does commercial work in Los Angeles. He’s celebrating his solo debut, How I Live, an instrumental disc rich with jazz-funk smoothness. —Chris Parker
