China National Orchestra & NC International Orchestra: "Trans-Pacific Melodies"

When: Sun., Oct. 6, 7 p.m. 2013
Price: $27-47
If you're curious about the meaning of "erhu" and "suona," check out the China National Orchestra—an 80-plus-piece traditional music group—and the N.C. International Orchestra. The East-meets-West event offers a chance to compare ensembles, soloists and instrumentation between different classical music traditions, and to hear some of China's ancient folk and court music. The night's stars might be the unfamiliar instruments such as the erhu (a two-string fiddle) and the suona (a high-pitched oboe), among various mouth organs and bell chimes. —Chris Vitiello
