Chimes at Midnight, Make Light, Nick Kirkland

When: Sun., Aug. 23, 9 p.m. 2015
Price: $5
Half of propulsive Raleigh psych quartet No Eyes pause for dual solo sets in the basement: Nick Kirkland opens, while fellow member Cyrus Atkins offers his own songs under the new guise Chimes at Midnight in the final slot. Atkins broods over major chords, his bellow landing somewhere between Stones-like ballads and Lou Reed sneers. Winston-Salem trio Make Light, however, use their heartfelt numbers as backbones for shadowy electronic pop, where sequenced beats and florid synthesizers unfurl beneath ghostly vocals. —Grayson Haver Currin
