El Kilombo serves primarily the egos of the privileged indivduals who started it and is NOT a viable community center. Their website is a joke, if you check their events and programs. I have lived nearby since they opened, and it is rare to ever see anyone going into the building. I was interested in it when they started it in 2006, but quickly realized it was an opportunity for Duke students to play at "fighting the man." A few years ago they did groundwork for planting a garden in the park on Bay Street but didn't actually follow through with the planting, they just created deep ruts in the ground that were a saftey hazard for any kids running around.

I think that this OND park issue is more play acting on their part. If they were really intentional about being the community center they claim to be -- they would be by now. As it is, I think they are boring and useless.
