Chelsea Girls

When: Thu., Nov. 18, 7 p.m. 2010
Price: Free

Andy Warhol ran with an interesting collection of demi-celebrities in the 1960s. If you have a short to-do list and four hours to kill, you can vicariously hang with members of his posse, including Nico, Edie Sedgwick, Brigid Berlin and International Velvet. Chelsea Girls is essentially a Warhol home movie, with members of his retinue playacting in loosely organized shoots at the Chelsea Hotel in lower Manhattan and at Warhol's Factory studio. Many of Warhol's "superstars" owed their small notoriety more to an accident of place and time than to any particular talent or even charisma; the strategy of filming in split screen, with two images side by side, is a welcome chance to refocus your attention when the goings-on drag. For the patient, the film is a worthwhile ethnography of late-'60s bohemian New York. The last hour or so features a strangely absorbing, LSD-induced stream-of-consciousness monologue by Eric Emerson, a 22-year-old bisexual ballet dancer. The free screening starts at 7 p.m. and is preceded by a 6 p.m. tour of the Ackland Art Museum's portrait exhibitions, which includes Big Shots: Andy Warhol Polaroids. —Marc Maximov
