Chasing Trane: The John Coltrane Documentary

When: Thu., July 6, 8 p.m. 2017
Price: $5-$7

These days, there seems to be a documentary about every subject, so it's surprising that it took so long for one to be made about saxophonist John Coltrane. But the wait seems to have been worthwhile. Writer and director John Scheinfield (The U.S. vs. John Lennon and Who Is Harry Nilsson...?) has gathered an all-star cast of talking heads to laud the son of Hamlet, North Carolina, who became one of the most important musicians of the twentieth century. Since Coltrane did few TV or radio interviews, Denzel Washington gives voice to excerpts from his assorted print interviews. While there is something a little bit weird about seeing Bill Clinton and Cornel West opine about jazz, and though it occasionally veers a little too close to hagiography, the film brims with unexpected details and previously unseen video footage of Trane at home and in concert. In addition to the screening, Raleigh's Bloodworth Combo offers its own tribute through music. —Dan Ruccia
