I was just in Chapel Hill earlier this week, and was saddened to see all the empty stores. I now live near Tulsa, where Chapel Hill's economic development director, Dwight Bassett, is from. Downtown to most in Tulsa is Brookside and Cherry Street - similar to Franklin Street, and they are thriving with great restaurants and many locally owned stores. These areas are similar to Franklin Street and Chapel Hill should compare itself with these, and not downtown Tulsa, which is all together a different situation.

I lived in Chapel Hill most of my life and managed several stores on Franklin Street (East and West). Chapel Hill could restore most of its downtown appeal if it simply created a couple thousand free parking spaces (with a three hour limit during the day.)
