Charlie Mars

When: Tue., June 18, 9 p.m. 2013
Price: $10-12

It's not what you say, but how you say it. Charlie Mars' dark, brooding poesy was typically yoked to the type of watery adult-pop produced by John Alagia (John Mayer, Josh Kelley, Jason Mraz). Mars finally started to move beyond that with 2009's Like A Bird, Like a Plane, developing an atmospheric, syncopated sound not so reliant on pop hooks. Even better is his fifth disc, Blackberry Light. Produced by Daniel Lanois (whose spacious approach to Emmylou Harris' Wrecking Ball inspired Mars' prior effort), it explores a minimalist sound rich in background detail and ambient warmth that really lets the songs breathe and bloom.. 9 p.m., $10–$12, Parker
