Charlie Lovett

When: Tue., Nov. 3, 7 p.m. 2015

QUAIL RIDGE BOOKS & MUSIC—It's not even Halloween, and Walmart already has its Christmas swag out, so why shouldn't Winston-Salem's Charlie Lovett go ahead and publish his sequel, recently out from Viking, to A Christmas Carol? The best-selling author is a former antiquarian book dealer whose love of literature fuels not just the creation, but also the substance of his novels. He likes the seam where literary history, spec-fic and mystery stories meet. The Bookman's Tale was Shakespeare scholarship cloaked in an amateur detective yarn, while First Impressions dealt with Jane Austen writing Sense and Sensibility. Lovett's at it again in The Further Adventures of Ebenezer Scrooge, a Dickens pastiche that picks up the reformed miser's story 20 years later, when his year-round Christmas cheer occasions a different sort of encounter with the ghost of Jacob Marley. Lovett also visits the Regulator in Durham at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 4. 7 p.m., free, 3522 Wade Ave., Raleigh, 919-828-1588, —Brian Howe
