Re: “Your Party’s Dead, Man: Data Shows New N.C. Voters Abandoning Dems, GOP

Just because unaffiliated voters can vote in either primary, it doesn't mean they do. Judging by voter turnout in NC, in general, no one votes. We had about 35% turnout during 2016 election and the midterms are closer to 15%.

I stand by my comment. Democrats must do more to recruit voters. They have to show a clear difference between themselves and the Republicans AND the national Party. Republicans have been successful locally because Democrats aren't very active outside the large urban areas. Judging by comments from the folks "back home" in rural NC, the Democratic Party doesn't appeal to them because they're anti-gun, pro-abortion, etc... Local Dems have done very little to earn these labels, this comes from the national politics trickling down. All this plus the 2010 gerrymander has created the super majority in Raleigh.

Re: “Your Party’s Dead, Man: Data Shows New N.C. Voters Abandoning Dems, GOP

I think this demonstrates a lack of voter education and outreach from the Democrats. New voters who don't register a party affiliation are troubling because they fail to understand the primary process. This means they're likely disengaged when it comes to anything other than presidential elections.

State level Democrats must do more to get voters to the poll for the smaller stakes races in the state if they ever hope recapture the General Assembly. As things stand, local Democrats are viewed through whatever lens people use when viewing the national Democratic party regardless of how close the two mirror each other.
