Chang-rae Lee

When: Mon., March 7, 7:30 p.m. 2011

The Surrendered is the latest book by The New York Times best-selling and prize-winning author Chang-rae Lee, a Princeton University creative writing professor. He has been writing about Korean immigrants' struggle with assimilation, but this is his largest and most ambitious work to date. His protagonist, June Han, is 11 at the start of the Korean War, during which her mother and siblings struggle to survive amid the marauding forces of both North and South. On her journey, she has a chance meeting with Hector, who leads her to an orphanage run by an American missionary couple. Thirty years later, living in New York City, June has almost succeeded in reconciling with her past, when she realizes she must seek out Hector for a new journey and a final surrender to peace. The author will read and sign at 7:30 p.m. —Christina Cass
