When: Sun., July 19, 9 p.m. 2015
Price: $7
Ian Svenonius has been a punk rock intellectual since the late ’80s, when he was working free jazz and left-wing politics into Nation of Ulysses. He’d go on to front a string of D.C. cult acts—The Make Up, Weird War and Cupid Car Club, among them—that pushed his Marxist musings through sounds from post-modern gospel to raging hardcore. His current group, Chain and the Gang, keeps the agitprop popping. Their records swing like under-practiced Motown jams played by a resistance army’s fife and drum corps. —Jeff Klingman
