Celebrating Doc: Deep River Rising with Wayne Henderson & Jeff Little

When: Sat., June 30, 8 p.m. 2012
Price: $22-35

Folk legend, crossover pioneer and North Carolina icon Doc Waston was set to make his public finale on this night at age 89, with a concert featuring several of his closest friends and collaborators. The performance was to follow the Doc Watson Symposium, a free, daylong convocation exploring such themes as Watson's early influences, the style and import of his playing, and his role in the folk revival. But Watson died late last month, leaving a legacy of musicianship, integrity and accessibility that's unrivaled. Still, Watson's friends—Deep River Rising, Wayne Henderson, Jeff Little—will play tonight, and they'll join a few others to talk about Watson earlier in the day.

"The event was never meant to be just another Doc Watson concert, but rather a Doc Watson celebration, a chance for all of us to express our appreciation for the wonderful music and example he's provided for us over five decades," explains George Holt, the museum's director of performing arts. "Within a few hours of Doc's passing we knew we needed to carry on with our plans, now more than ever." The free symposium starts at 10:30 a.m.; the concert starts at 8 p.m. and costs $11–$35. —Grayson Currin
