Cate Lineberry

When: Thu., May 23, 7:30 p.m. 2013

Raleigh's Cate Lineberry, whose work has appeared in National Geographic, Smithsonian and other publications, tells the long-lost tale of an extraordinary rescue in World War II in her new book The Secret Rescue: An Untold Story of American Nurses and Medics Behind Nazi Lines. A deadly crash in Albania in 1943 left 26 U.S. Army medics and nurses trapped behind enemy lines, beginning an ordeal that would take them months to escape—with the aid of locals who risked their own lives to help them. Lineberry's tale tells of both the survivors and the efforts to rescue them. (If you miss her Quail Ridge event, you can also catch her at McIntyre in Fearrington Village at 11 a.m. Saturday.) —Zack Smith
