Cat on a Hot Tin Roof

When: June 8-24 2012
Price: $16-22

The "powerful stench of mendacity" returns to Raleigh this week. Not only is the General Assembly back in session, but a revival of one of Tennessee Williams' most famous works is on the boards at Theatre in the Park. The earthy 1955 drama whose central characters include Big Daddy, his faded athlete of a son, Brick, and Brick's desperate wife, Maggie the Cat, dealt frankly with a series of Southern sacred cows including sanctimony, greed and homophobia. But these characters' struggles against mendacity—the lies they're surrounded by on a Mississippi plantation—provide some of the most powerful moments in this Pulitzer Prize-winning play. How far will Maggie go in the attempt to save anything from the general decay? How far can she go? The questions are revisited in a production starring John T. "Jack" Hall, Sarah Bousquet and Rob Rainbolt, and directed by Ira David Wood IV. This weekend's opening performances are at 7:30 p.m. Friday–Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday; the play continues through June 24. —Byron Woods
